As we speak with our clients and other banks, one theme keeps coming up: financial institutions are looking for practical ways to prepare for the next phase of treasury modernization, even when they are not yet ready to commit to large-scale transformation programs.
This is why many of our recent conversations have started with a seemingly narrow topic: intraday repo. What we are discovering is that these conversations are rarely just about intraday repo. It is an entry point into a much broader discussion about the future of market infrastructure, liquidity management, settlement, and operating models.
Today, Teciem is actively engaging with several European banks to understand how they are approaching this challenge. While each institution has its own priorities, a common pattern is emerging. For some banks, intraday repo is attractive because it offers a potential way to access liquidity more efficiently, particularly when funding is needed for only a few hours rather than overnight. For others, it presents an opportunity to improve funding management, reduce costs, and optimize balance sheet usage.
What is striking is that the initial business requirement is often quite focused. A bank may be exploring how to obtain short-term USD funding more efficiently, improve treasury operations, or take advantage of new market capabilities. On the surface, these appear to be highly specific use cases. But as discussions progress, the implications quickly expand beyond a single desk or product.
This is because intraday repo sits at the intersection of several major industry shifts. As banks examine how such transactions could be executed and settled, they inevitably begin exploring new settlement models, emerging digital market infrastructures, and the operational changes required to support them. Questions that initially concern treasury or funding quickly extend to technology architecture, legal frameworks, risk management, compliance, operations, and business strategy. What starts as a narrow requirement becomes a much broader transformation conversation. Intraday repo can become a kind of “Pandora’s box” that opens the door to many other changes.
This is precisely what we see in client discussions. Banks increasingly recognize that the opportunity is not simply a new product or a system enhancement. It is part of a larger modernization journey that has the potential to affect front office, middle office, back office, legal, compliance, risk, and innovation teams alike. The challenge is no longer whether these developments matter. The challenge is understanding how they will impact the institution and determining the right path forward.
The conversations themselves are evolving as a result. Instead of remaining confined to individual business units, discussions are beginning to bring together stakeholders from across the bank. Innovation teams, project groups, treasury professionals, operations specialists, and risk experts are all contributing perspectives. This cross-functional dialogue is essential because the future state cannot be evaluated through a single lens. Success will depend on understanding both the strategic possibilities and the practical realities of implementation.
At Teciem, our role is to help facilitate these discussions. We are not approaching intraday repo as a standalone product opportunity. Rather, we see it as a valuable starting point for helping banks evaluate broader modernization trends, understand the operational and technical implications, and identify where industry adoption may be heading. By engaging with multiple institutions, we can bring together perspectives, share lessons learned, and help clients understand how their peers are thinking about similar challenges.
The future of capital markets infrastructure is being shaped today through conversations, experimentation, and collaboration. The institutions that begin exploring these questions now will be better positioned to navigate the changes ahead.
If your organization is evaluating intraday repo, digital settlement models, or the broader modernization agenda, we invite you to contact us at Teciem. Beyond technology and advisory expertise, we offer access to a growing community of banks that are working through the same questions and learning from one another. The entry point may be intraday repo, but the conversation is much bigger. By engaging now, you can help shape what comes next rather than simply react to it.
