Earlier this year, Teciem was established as a standalone company following the carve-out from Finastra. Now, with the backing from Apax Partners, new investment and expanding teams – Teciem is strengthening its position as a dedicated treasury and capital markets partner. In this interview, Robin Amlot speaks to Wissam Khoury, CEO of Teciem, about its investment priorities, AI, cloud modernisation and overall strategy.

  • You’re a young business, a new business, except you’re not, because you’re a buyout backed by Apax Partners. Let’s begin with the background to that and the creation of Teciem as the standalone business it is now.

Let me start with what you just said. We are not a young business, but we are a young organisation. The business has been in the market for many years. Some of our clients and solutions have been there for more than 35 years, so we are very well entrenched in the market and very proud of our heritage.

So what hasn’t changed is that we remain a business with more than 1,400 expert colleagues, more than 35 years of treasury and capital markets expertise, serving more than 300 customers, with the average customer tenure being over 20 years, proving the trust, loyalty and leadership we have in the market.

But what has changed is our ability to focus and invest. As an independent company, every decision we make is dedicated to treasury and capital markets. We’re accelerating investment across our products, cloud capabilities and AI-driven innovation, while continuing to strengthen our teams and deepen our engagement with customers, working alongside them to solve their challenges.

And we’re seeing strong momentum across the business. Financial institutions are looking for partners that combine deep domain expertise with the agility and the ability to innovate, and that’s exactly where Teciem is positioned. We are now ready to realise our ambition as a dedicated and fully focused treasury and capital markets business

  • You’ve got an established customer base and an established product portfolio. What happens next? How are you planning to invest in developing that portfolio?

We are in the IT industry, and if you don’t continuously invest in your solutions, you can render yourself irrelevant. We operate in a market that is highly regulated, highly complex and always looking for innovation.

Some banks may not always be at the forefront of innovation because of those constraints, but if they want to change their business models, they must become more technology-driven or rely more heavily on technology.

For us, that means investing heavily in our products and solutions. It is not necessarily about keeping up with functions and features, because we are already very strong there. It is about investing where it makes the biggest difference for our customers and creating a future-proof platform for their operations.

But we have not only accelerated investment across product development, cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities, but also across our key talent. Over the past year, we have grown our organisation with new leadership, product, engineering and customer-facing talent, giving us even greater capacity to innovate and support clients globally.

And our momentum is reflected not only in investment but also in customer adoption. We continue to grow our relationships with long-standing clients while welcoming new institutions that are looking for a partner capable of supporting their transformation journeys.

Customers are increasingly looking for greater agility, scalability and resilience, while wanting faster and easier access to the innovations happening in the market. We are therefore moving towards a SaaS-based operating model that combines automated deployment, secure hosting, continuous delivery and operational services.

  • Your focus is investment to make a difference for customers. What difference would those customers have noticed?

Clear focus, clear communication and faster reaction time to market.

The biggest change is increased collaboration with customers through earlier engagement and greater co-development and co-innovation. Our product roadmap is increasingly being shaped through direct collaboration with customers.

Rather than innovating for institutions, we are innovating alongside them, ensuring that cloud, AI and workflow transformation initiatives solve practical challenges faced by treasury and capital markets teams today.

We are working with clients to create the right solution for their operating models, helping them take full advantage of the innovation and manage the complexity of their day-to-day more effectively.

  • You mentioned the elephant in every technologist’s room, AI. What are you doing to manage the speed of evolution here and the integration of AI into your products?

There is no doubt that AI is one of the most significant technology shifts in our industry in decades. We believe it has tremendous potential to transform treasury and capital markets.

Our approach combines innovation, governance and responsible adoption.

We are using AI in three different areas.

First, we are using AI internally to increase efficiency across our product development lifecycle. This is changing how we operate, helping us get closer to the market and bring things to market faster.

Second, we are using AI to optimise enterprise functions within the organisation, including legal, finance and marketing.

Finally, we are working with customers on AI-led use cases that make the biggest difference to their businesses. These can help with decision-making, simplify operations and enable customers to grow and introduce new asset classes.

AI is moving very quickly, but our objective remains unchanged: to deliver trusted, enterprise-grade capabilities that solve real customer problems. AI is helping us do that.

  • What trends do you see beyond AI adoption? How is the business changing and what do you need to do to keep up?

The first is the continued modernisation of core technology. Cloud-ready platforms are becoming essential, not only for efficiency but also to enable future innovation and respond quickly to changing market demands.

AI will also see significant adoption in areas such as operations, post-trade processing, analytics and decision support, where firms can generate measurable business value.

At the same time, we are seeing growing market complexity, increasing regulatory requirements, accelerated settlement cycles and large volumes of data. Expectations around resilience and risk management are also rising.

All of these create new operational demands.

Our ongoing engagement with customers focuses on these topics, and that is how we guide our product investment.

  • You mentioned new operational demands. Is that one of the areas where you see big opportunities as well as big challenges?

Absolutely. There is a huge opportunity to help financial institutions navigate this transformation that involves rethinking operating models, adopting AI, and responding to regulatory pressure.

These initiatives create opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency and performance, but none happens in isolation.

We help customers balance innovation with risk, regulation, efficiency and cost pressures.

We are a global provider, and challenges in the UK and Europe differ from those in the US, Asia-Pacific and Middle East.

Customers may want evergreening, continuous upgrades, managed capacity or application operations while remaining on-premise. Ultimately, they can move to the cloud when they are ready.

We have offerings across that entire spectrum.

  • I’m going to call you an optimist. You’re enthusiastic about the future. What does Teciem look like in five years’ time?

We want our customers to see us not only as a technology provider, but as a strategic partner that understands their business, helps them navigate change and works alongside them to shape the future of treasury and capital markets.

We will continue to deepen collaboration through co-innovation and advisory partnerships and shape the product as we move forward.

We are already a leader in this market, but we aspire to be the most trusted partner globally.

That is where I see Teciem moving.

And yes, I am optimistic.

My optimism comes from two things.

First, it is the timing of establishing Teciem as a standalone business. We have the heritage, expertise, customer relationships and technology of an established business, combined with the ability to focus our investments and resources entirely on treasury and capital markets. That gives us a strong platform for the next phase of growth.

Second, the market itself is evolving rapidly.

Technology, AI and banking requirements are all changing at pace. We are not in a stagnant industry.

The best part is that we are a technology provider that can utilise existing technologies and bring significant added value to customers. Banking is traditional and highly regulated, so innovation needs to be tailored to that environment.

I believe we can make a huge difference through our combination of technology and deep domain expertise.
